Apoptosis
Organized series of events that, once triggered, leads to cell death.
Also: Programmed cell death
Genetically controlled cell death pathway characterized by cell shrinkage, nuclear fragmentation, and orderly removal of cell remnants. Mediated by caspase proteases and central to development, tissue turnover, and removal of damaged cells.
