Simplest sphingolipid containing no attached group at the terminal hydroxyl.

Sphingosine plus a fatty acid linked by an amide bond. The structural backbone of sphingomyelin, cerebrosides, and gangliosides; also functions as a lipid second messenger in apoptosis and stress signaling.
