Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
Chronic symptomatic or complicated reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus due to lower esophageal sphincter dysfunction.

Symptoms include heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain, and dysphagia. Complications include esophagitis, Barrett esophagus, stricture, and adenocarcinoma. MNT focuses on weight loss when overweight, avoidance of trigger foods (caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, mint, fatty foods, citrus), smaller meals, upright posture after eating, and elevated head of bed. Proton pump inhibitors are the most effective medical therapy.
