Genetically Modified Organisms
Organisms whose genetic material has been altered using biotechnology methods not occurring naturally.
Also: Bioengineered Food, GMOs
U.S. labeling as 'bioengineered' is required as of 2022. Major commercial GMO crops include corn, soybean, cotton, canola, sugar beet, alfalfa, and several fruits and vegetables modified for pest resistance, herbicide tolerance, or nutritional improvement (e.g., Golden Rice with beta-carotene). Scientific consensus supports the safety of currently approved GMOs, though concerns about pesticide use and food-system concentration persist.
