Hemodialysis
Renal replacement therapy that pumps blood through an external dialyzer to remove waste products, fluid, and electrolytes.
Also: HD
Typically performed three times weekly for 3 to 4 hours per session via a surgically created arteriovenous fistula, AV graft, or central venous catheter. Kt/V and urea reduction ratio (URR) measure adequacy. HD causes loss of amino acids and water-soluble vitamins, raising protein needs and supplement requirements. Common complications include intradialytic hypotension, muscle cramps, and protein-energy wasting.
