Primary (essential) hypertension has no identifiable cause and accounts for >90% of cases. Secondary hypertension is due to a treatable cause (renal artery stenosis, primary aldosteronism, sleep apnea). MNT centers on the DASH dietary pattern, sodium restriction (<2,300 mg/day, ideally 1,500 mg), potassium-rich foods, weight management, alcohol moderation, and physical activity.
