Ketone bodies
Acetoacetate, β-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone formed from fatty acid oxidation when four-carbon intermediates are scarce.
Water-soluble fuels generated in the liver during prolonged fasting, starvation, or untreated type 1 diabetes. β-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate can be reconverted to acetyl-CoA in extrahepatic tissues.
