Peritoneal Dialysis
Renal replacement therapy that uses the peritoneal membrane as a filter, instilling and draining dialysate via a catheter.
Also: PD
Performed at home daily (CAPD with multiple exchanges, or APD using a cycler at night). Glucose in dialysate is absorbed and contributes 300 to 500 kcal/day, which must be accounted for in the nutrition prescription. Protein losses through the peritoneum raise protein needs to ~1.2 to 1.3 g/kg/day. Peritonitis is the main infectious complication.
