Substrate-level phosphorylation

Transfer of a phosphate group from one organic molecule to another to form ATP.

ATP synthesis directly coupled to a metabolic reaction (e.g., phosphoglycerate kinase and pyruvate kinase in glycolysis; succinyl-CoA synthetase in the TCA cycle), independent of the electron transport chain.
